Badagry General Hospital, NDLEA Partner to Combat Drug Abus

General Hospital, Badagry, and the NDLEA Seme Special Area Command agreed to collaborate on combating drug abuse and promoting public health.

The General Hospital, Badagry, has entered into a strategic partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Seme Special Area Command, to strengthen public awareness on the dangers of drug abuse, promote community safety and improve the health and well-being of residents across the Seme-Badagry axis.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the partnership was announced during a familiarisation visit by the Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of General Hospital, Badagry, Dr. Oluseyi Adesola, to the Area Commander of the NDLEA Seme Special Area Command, Commander of Narcotics Rita Njoku Chinyere, at the agency’s office on Tuesday.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Adesola commended the NDLEA for its unwavering commitment to tackling substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking, describing the agency as a beacon of hope in the fight against drug-related crimes.

He reaffirmed the hospital’s readiness to collaborate with the command by providing healthcare support, professional expertise and public health interventions aimed at preventing substance abuse and promoting healthier communities.

“We’re here to appreciate you for the excellent work that you’re doing. What you’re doing gives the country hope, and we wish to identify with you as a reputable organisation,” Dr. Adesola said.

The Medical Director noted that stronger collaboration between healthcare institutions and law enforcement agencies is critical to addressing the growing challenge of drug abuse, particularly among young people, adding that prevention, treatment and rehabilitation must go hand in hand.

Responding, the Area Commander, Commander of Narcotics Rita Njoku Chinyere, expressed appreciation to the hospital management for the visit, describing the partnership as timely and essential in strengthening the agency’s capacity to deliver on its mandate.

She explained that the collaboration would enhance awareness campaigns, improve access to rehabilitation support and facilitate community-based interventions targeted at reducing substance abuse across the Seme-Badagry corridor.

“We would require officers from your facility to join us to promote sensitisation on prevention of substance abuse ravaging our country,” she said.

Commander Chinyere also appealed for the hospital’s support in implementing comprehensive sensitisation and rehabilitation programmes within communities, stressing that many families continue to suffer the devastating consequences of drug addiction.

She recounted the heartbreaking experience of a woman who reportedly developed severe emotional distress and later died following her son’s addiction to illicit drugs, underscoring the urgent need for sustained public education and early intervention.

The meeting also featured the presentation of a commemorative plaque by the NDLEA to Dr. Adesola in recognition of the hospital’s commitment to collaboration, while the Medical Director presented a corporate gift to the Area Commander as a symbol of mutual partnership.

Also present at the meeting were the Director of Clinical Services and Training, Dr. Akinwunmi Akinyemi; Apex Nurse, Mary Ajayi; the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Tajudeen Ogunbekun; alongside other management staff of General Hospital, Badagry.

Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to working together to combat drug abuse, strengthen public health advocacy and create safer communities through sustained awareness, prevention and rehabilitation initiatives.
