A Centurion Gets a Serenading Send-Forth as Family Pays Last Respect in Service of Songs

A remarkable farewell was held for 107-year-old Late Madam Ajoke Ekundayo, who passed away on her birthday, July 25, 2024.

The Service of Songs, held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Love Assembly, Ilupeju, Lagos, on September 25, 2024, drew family members, friends, and well-wishers to pay their final respects to the centurion.

The day began with a heavy downpour, symbolizing the passing of a great soul whose life illuminated those around her.

By evening, the skies cleared, allowing a bright atmosphere to welcome guests for the solemn ceremony, which began at 5:30 p.m.

 

 

Family members, all dressed in white with touches of gold, gathered with the church community to celebrate the life of the late matriarch.

The event began with an opening prayer followed by a praise and worship session, lifting the spirits of those present.

The first hymn, “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less”, resonated with the attendees as the instrumentalists and choristers set the tone for a heartfelt evening.

The first Bible reading, from John 5:24-29, emphasized the promise of resurrection for those who have lived righteous lives, like Madam Ekundayo, whose deeds were cherished by many.

The service continued with the second hymn, “Alleluia, Alleluia”, rendered in Yoruba.

A second Bible reading, from 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, offered hope in the eternal reunion promised to the saints.

The message of resurrection was echoed, reminding attendees of the joyful meeting with loved ones in heaven.

As the third hymn, “King of Glory, King of Peace”, filled the air, the spiritual atmosphere remained profound.

M The third Bible reading, from Philippians 1:20-23, emphasized the Christian belief that death is gain for those who have lived in Christ, providing comfort to the mourners.

A special musical rendition of Lara George’s “Ijoba Orun” moved the congregation, focusing on the heavenly reward awaiting the saints.

This was followed by tributes from family, neighbors, and church members, each recounting fond memories of Madam Ajoke Ekundayo’s life of generosity and godliness.

The RCCG Love Assembly Parish pastor delivered a short but powerful sermon, reminding everyone of the importance of living a life pleasing to God, so as to partake in the heavenly promises.

The service concluded with the final hymn, “Jerusalem on High”, rendered in Yoruba.

After the closing grace, the family shared details of the remaining funeral rites: the lying-in-state, funeral service, interment, and reception scheduled for the following day.

Late Madam Ajoke Ekundayo was truly honored with a serenading and heartfelt farewell, as her life and legacy continue to inspire those she touched.
