The Abia State government has voiced strong concerns over the improper use of the titles “His Royal Majesty” and “His Royal Highness” by certain Ezeogos in various autonomous communities across the state, despite not being officially recognized as traditional rulers by the government.
A statement issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, revealed that these Ezeogos have also been found to unlawfully confer chieftaincy titles on individuals, including their friends and citizens of their respective communities, even though they lack the authority to do so.

The statement further emphasised that, in accordance with the Abia State of Nigeria Traditional Rulers and Autonomous Communities (Amendment) Law No. 8 of 2015, only government-recognized traditional rulers are authorized to bestow chieftaincy titles on individuals who possess proven integrity and unquestionable character.
The statement read: “The traditional institution in the state is a highly respected and revered one and should be treated with the dignity it deserves.
Therefore, the recent conferment of chieftaincy titles by certain Ezeogos in the autonomous communities of Arochukwu, Abriba, Nkporo, and Ohafia is hereby annulled in the interest of peace within the state.”
The Abia State Government also announced that security agencies have been placed on high alert to arrest and prosecute any Ezeogo or individual who defies this directive in any autonomous community.
