On Sunday, February 7th, 2021, eminent Nigerians converged in Ikorodu, Lagos State in solidarity and support of Hon. Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa and her family at the Fidau Prayer Service held in honour of the former Lawmaker’s mother, Alhaja Erogbogbo, who died on February 1, 2021.

Having lived a long and fulfilling life, hers was a celebration of life to thank God for granting Alhaja the grace of nine decades to make a difference in the world around her and also wish her Aljanat Firdaus as a reward for the exemplary life she lived on earth.

Nicknamed “The kind Teacher” during her heydays in civil service as a Government Teacher, Alhaja will be best remembered for her unyielding commitment towards inculcating time-proven values to her legions of progenies and will be held with the highest regard by all those who worked under and alongside her in the course a distinguished teaching career.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa is a former member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives and current Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM). The former Lawmaker who served three terms at the Green Chamber representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency came into prominence while working for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), anchoring the weekly NTA Newsline programme and taking a particular interest in poverty and social justice issues.

In a bid to attain political influence as a tool for advancing her quest for social justice, in 2003 she decided to vie for a seat at the Federal House of Representatives, winning with a substantial majority. Dabiri-Erewa went on to sponsor a number of bills during her time at the FHR, notably the Nigerian Diaspora Commision bill, geared towards providing a platform to cater for the needs of the teeming Nigerians living and plying their trade in the diaspora.

Now chairing a commission she urged the Presidency to create, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa has worked assiduously to assist Nigerians living abroad and also take the impact of the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration across Nigeria’s shores. She has also taken up the daunting task of repairing the battered reputation of Nigerians in the diaspora, which has largely been smeared by the involvement of diaspora Nigerians in different forms of criminality and organized crime.

It is on the basis of Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s magnificent strides as a public servant, more-so in a patriarchal society where women are afforded little or no opportunities to contribute to nation building that it becomes fitting to hear what she had to say about the woman under whose guidance she learned the values of hard work, decency and altruistic living.

In an interview at Alhaja Erogbogbo’s Fidau Prayer Service, Hon. Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa told EKO HOT BLOG that much of her interest in ameliorating the plight of the less privileged is a function of the first hand tutelage she enjoyed from “the kind teacher”, who taught her the value of living beyond one’s personal aggrandizement.

She recalled the numerous sage counsel given to her by Alhaja Erogbogbo during her formative years, a foundation which ultimately inspired her interest in social justice and the burning desire to root out all forms social inequality from the society.
