Despite high expectations from the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) and fans for Spittler to renew his contract in November after a successful 10-month tenure, the 62-year-old German coach made it clear he does not intend to extend his contract.

Appointed by FERWAFA on November 1, 2023, Spittler has led Rwanda to the top of Group C in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers, ahead of South Africa, Benin Republic, Lesotho, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe. Additionally, he has guided Rwanda to third place in AFCON 2025 qualifiers Group D, behind Nigeria and Benin Republic but ahead of Libya.

According to Kigali Today, Spittler confirmed that he will retire from coaching when his one-year contract as Amavubi Head Coach expires in two months.

“When I arrived here, they asked me how long I wanted to stay, and I said I wanted to stay for one year because, after that, I will retire from coaching. My boots are wearing out,” Spittler said.

His announcement caught reporters off guard, and when pressed for clarification, the former Technical Director of Yemen, Sierra Leone, and Mozambique affirmed his decision to step down.

Spittler has managed the Amavubi in eight matches, including six competitive fixtures and two friendlies, achieving three wins, four draws, and one loss.
