Ajuri Ngelale’s Resignation: Five Top Contenders Emerge for Tinubu’s Spokesman Role
The resignation of Ajuri Ngelale as Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity has stirred speculation within political circles about who might succeed him.
Ngelale cited a “vexatious medical situation” in his family as the reason for his departure, but multiple sources suggest his exit was not entirely voluntary, indicating a dismissal after requests for a graceful exit.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Ngelale’s resignation is believed to be linked to a reported power struggle with Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, which allegedly affected his standing and effectiveness in the presidential villa. Despite this, Onanuga has not been considered for the now-vacant role, leaving the position open.

According to reports, five prominent candidates have emerged as frontrunners to replace Ngelale.
Daniel Bwala
Daniel Bwala, former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign, is reportedly among the top contenders. Once a staunch critic of Tinubu, Bwala’s political alignment shifted after visiting the president in January 2024 and later in France, signaling his support for the administration.
Previously a member of the APC, Bwala left the party over the controversial Muslim/Muslim ticket but has since shown commitment to Tinubu.
Sunday Dare
Sunday Dare, an accomplished journalist and former sports minister, is another name in the running. With extensive media contacts both locally and internationally, Dare has longstanding ties with Tinubu.
Despite not being the top choice, his decades-long association with the president and familiarity with the inner workings of the villa position him as a strong contender.

Tunde Rahman
Tunde Rahman, currently serving as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media Affairs, is said to be the frontrunner for the role.
Rahman’s deep connections within the Nigerian media, having worked at major outlets such as Daily Times, Punch, and ThisDay, make him a strong candidate. However, there are reportedly powerful figures opposing his appointment due to his perceived eccentricity.
AbdulAziz AbdulAziz
Currently the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Print Media, AbdulAziz AbdulAziz gained prominence through his investigative reports, including the exposé that led to Kemi Adeosun’s resignation as finance minister.

Although her name has been mentioned, she is said to have little interest in taking on the spokesperson role.
