American Airlines Jet Collides with Military Helicopter, Crashes in Washington DC

An American Airlines flight carrying dozens of passengers collided with a military helicopter while approaching Washington, DC’s Ronald Reagan National Airport, officials have confirmed.
The aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet with 60 passengers and four crew members on board, was arriving from Wichita, Kansas, when it struck the helicopter near the runway at around 21:00 EST (02:00 GMT) on Wednesday.

The impact caused the plane to crash into the Potomac River, where rescue teams, including boats and divers, are searching for survivors.
According to US media reports, the aircraft has broken apart in the river, complicating recovery efforts. The military helicopter involved in the collision, a Black Hawk, was carrying three US Army soldiers and had taken off from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, a defence official said.

US President Donald Trump said he had been “fully briefed on the terrible accident” and praised first responders for their swift action. “I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise,” he added in a statement.
Operations at Ronald Reagan National Airport have been suspended as emergency crews respond. The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the incident.
