Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 78 more illegally parked containerised trucks on top of High Bridge by Lilly Pond inward Apapa and Sifax axis of Ijora (Olopa), Lagos.
The agency revealed the development in a statement issued by its Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, on Sunday night.
According to the LASTMA spokesperson, the trucks were seized during an early Sunday morning enforcement operations led by the General Manager, Mr. Bakare Oki Olalekan in conjunction with relevant security Agencies “to ensure smooth/seamless traffic for Lagosians during this festive seasons and beyond.”
He noted that the early Sunday morning enforcement operations lasted between 12 am to 7 am.
The LASTMA DG warned that the enforcement operations will be continuous with zero tolerance to indiscriminate parking and impediments in the axis.
He however, called on motorists to take possession of the road and not hesitate to inform LASTMA of any broken down or abandoned trailer/truck via the Agency hotlines 08100565860,08129928490, 08129928515 & 08129928593.
The Apapa area of Lagos, which houses Nigeria’s largest port, is notorious for heavy gridlocks due to the presence of several trucks on the road.
Despite the introduction of the E-Call Up System which was created to reduce the traffic of trucks around the Apapa port, the gridlocks have remained.
The Lagos State Government has appealed to stakeholders to embrace the E-Call Up System, stating that the initiative remains the best solution to eliminate gridlock along the Apapa-Tincan corridor.
In October, LASTMA impounded 18 trucks and removed abandoned and indiscriminately parked trucks on the Oshodi-Apapa expressway.
In an effort to improve progress, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed the removal of all impediments around the axis in November.
After a few weeks of sanity, drivers along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway were arrested, trucks suddenly returned along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway from Second Rainbow, Mile-2, and Berger Yard inward Coconut Tincan Port.
At least 16 suspected drivers were subsequently arrested during an enforcement carried out by a joint team led by LASTMA operatives.
