EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Alademayokun Olarewaju of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of Saturday’s by-election for the Akure North/Akure South Federal Constituency.

Declaring the result in Akure, the Returning Officer, Prof. Deji Ogunseni, said Olarewaju polled 26, 370 votes to defeat his closest rival, Olumuyiwa Adu of the Peoples Democratic Party, who scored 24, 201 votes.

Ogunseni said Olawale Oyekanmi of the Accord Party scored 41 votes; Oluwawemimo Fadekemi of ADP scored 465 votes; Joseph Ajayi of APP polled 125 votes; Johnson Olawusi of NRM scored 76 votes, while Opawole Tajudeen of SDP scored 68 votes.

The bye-election, held in two local governments of Akure North and Akure South, was peaceful but was said to have been heavily rocked with vote buying.

The election was trailed with alleged involvement of the Deputy Governor of the State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa in sharing money, in some units within the constituency.

Alade, however, refuted the allegation, saying that “I did not pay anyone to vote in my favor.”

He said that he had voted before being escorted out of the premises so as not to disrupt the poll, and expressed confidence that he would win the election because of his developmental program for Akure’s growth.

The bye-election was conducted to fill the vacant seat, following the death of the member representing the constituency, Adedayo Omolafe, in August, 2021.
