“I am in the National Assembly, but I can tell you for a fact that nobody brought anything to the National Assembly to say, ‘please approve this for the purchase of a new plane.’ It was done without my knowledge,” he asserted.
This statement comes amid widespread criticism over the unveiling of an Airbus A330 for the presidency in August. While Nigerians expressed outrage at the perceived extravagance, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga refuted claims that the aircraft was newly acquired, stating it had only been refurbished.
Addressing allegations that the National Assembly has become a rubber-stamp for President Tinubu’s administration, Abaribe rejected such notions but admitted the legislature faces challenges in fully exercising its oversight role.
“The lawmakers are not a rubber-stamp assembly,” he said, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with the executive for the benefit of Nigerians.
Abaribe’s comments highlight concerns over the separation of powers and the role of the legislature as a check on executive actions, amidst growing public scrutiny of the 10th National Assembly’s independence.
