BREAKING: Nigerian Army Releases Journalist Fisayo Soyombo After Three-Day Detention

The Nigerian Army has released Fisayo Soyombo, the founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), following his three-day detention.

Soyombo, a journalist renowned for exposing corruption, abuse of power, and human rights violations, was reportedly arrested by operatives of the Nigerian Army’s 6th Division on allegations of involvement in illegal oil bunkering.

In a statement issued during his detention, FIJ called for Soyombo’s immediate release, highlighting the growing threats to journalism in the country. Following intense media scrutiny and public outcry, FIJ confirmed Soyombo’s release on Friday.

Announcing the development on X (formerly Twitter), FIJ stated:
“We can confirm that our founder, @fisayosoyombo, has now been released by @HQNigerianArmy following the intense media campaign you all mounted.

“FIJ acknowledges the Nigerian Army’s deliberate mischaracterisation to suggest involvement in ‘illegal oil bunkering’ and will address this appropriately.”

The organization also expressed concerns over Soyombo’s safety, noting that extensive information about his investigative work was shared with the Army during his detention.

“We are assessing the situation and hoping that his safety will not be jeopardised after release,” FIJ added.

Soyombo has previously faced threats and harassment for his fearless reporting, with this latest incident further spotlighting the challenges faced by journalists in Nigeria.
