In a solemn procession led by the Odogwu of Asaba, Chief Nwanze Odua, a red-clad assembly moved around the palace, setting the tone for the impactful announcement.
At approximately 5 pm, the Onihe of Asaba, Obi Ubaka Attor, declared, “Iroko has fallen, the Asagba of Asaba has gone,” officially confirming the passing of Obi Chike Edozien.
The Palace Secretary, Chief Patrick Ndili, read a statement, stating, “With heavy hearts, we announce the transition unto eternal glory of our highly revered royal father, Asagba, Prof. Chike Edozien, the Asagba of Asaba. He was aged 100 years and the 13th Asagba of Asaba, who ascended the throne on July 1, 1991.”
The announcement was followed by the firing of 21 cannon shots, adding a poignant touch to the momentous occasion. The Onihe of Asaba, Obi Ubaka Attor, further disclosed the decoration of Asagba’s first son, Mr. Joseph Edozien, as the regent.
As the city mourns the loss of a centenarian monarch, the burial arrangements are yet to be unveiled, with the family and Asaba kingdom expected to make the necessary announcements in due course.
