Ballot Boxes Set on Fire in Oregon, Washington Ahead of US Presidential Election

Published

Ballot drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, were set ablaze just a week before the presidential election.

Authorities suspect that these fires are linked to an earlier incident on October 8, when an incendiary device was placed at a different ballot drop box in Vancouver.

Police departments in both cities reported that a similar Volvo vehicle was seen at both locations, indicating a possible connection. The use of an incendiary device in Portland was described as “similar in nature” to the Vancouver incident.

The fires resulted in the destruction of hundreds of ballots, and law enforcement characterized the act as deliberate and targeted. This attack occurs as millions of citizens participate in early voting for the closely contested election, with nearly 42 million ballots already cast.

Both Washington and Oregon operate as vote-by-mail states. Steve Hobbs, Washington’s secretary of state, condemned any threats or acts of violence aimed at disrupting the electoral process.

“I strongly denounce any acts of terror that aim to disrupt lawful and fair elections in Washington state,” Hobbs stated.

Voters have been encouraged to check their ballot status online to ensure their votes are counted. If a ballot is not marked as “received,” voters can print a replacement ballot or visit their local elections office for assistance.

Registered voters typically receive their ballots by mail a few weeks prior to elections and can return them via mail or by placing them in designated drop boxes.
