Nollywood Actor, Musician, and politician, Bankole Wellington in a controversial tweet on the microblogging platform, has suggested that child marriage should be stopped in Nigeria.

According to the tweet, the singer said that many Nigerians cover up the wrong act of molesting under-aged children under the guise of religion, tagging Saudi Arabia as a practical example of countries that have banned child marriages.

He backed up his claim by stating that Saudi Arabia is one of the most religious countries in the world, which is also a location for the popular Islamic worship center, Mecca but despite this, the country has constitutionally banned any marriage between children lower than 18years.

Banky W explained that if Saudi Arabia could enact such law, there is no excuse for Nigerians who still practice the act of child marriage.

He tweeted, “Some Nigerians try to hide behind religion as the reason they should be allowed to marry children. But if Saudi Arabia – the kingdom, the headquarters i.e. Mecca, could raise the age of Marriage to 18 (because it’s the right thing to do) then Nigeria has no excuse.

Meanwhile, the tweet has drawn the interest of other social media users who in the comment supported the singer’s suggestion while some said he is encroaching on people’s wishes with the post.
