Boko Haram Kills 20 Cameroonian Troops In Deadly Wulgo Attack

Boko Haram militants, disguised as herders and traders, launched a deadly attack on Cameroonian troops stationed in the Nigerian border town of Wulgo.

The militants infiltrated the area and raided military positions in a surprise assault early Tuesday morning, killing at least 20 Cameroonian soldiers.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to security sources, the attack began around 1:00 am and lasted for two hours, during which the militants overpowered the troops, set fire to their bases, and seized heavy weapons, including Soviet-made Shilka anti-aircraft guns. The fallen soldiers’ bodies were later transported back to Cameroon.

Residents of Gamboru, a nearby town, reported hearing heavy gunfire and explosions. Many were awake for Ramadan vigils when the attack unfolded. One witness, Muhammad Sani Umar, confirmed seeing three Cameroonian military trucks carrying 13 bodies across the border. He described the military bases as completely destroyed, with burned buildings and vehicles.

The militants had reportedly blended in with local herders at the weekly market in Gamboru before moving into Wulgo under cover of darkness. This tactic allowed them to evade detection before launching their deadly assault.

Boko Haram has increasingly focused its operations around Lake Chad and border regions since losing its stronghold in Sambisa Forest to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in 2021. The group has frequently targeted Wulgo and Waza, attacking civilians accused of spying for the military. In March 2021, a similar attack in Wulgo claimed the lives of two Cameroonian soldiers and injured several others.

Since 2009, jihadist violence in northeast Nigeria has resulted in over 40,000 deaths and displaced two million people. The conflict has spread into neighboring Cameroon, Niger, and Chad, leading to the formation of a regional military coalition to combat insurgents.
