Animashaun’s office said the removal of the water hyacinth is aimed at enhancing transportation, fishing, and other waterway activities in the local government area.
“This action is expected to alleviate the challenges faced by residents and traders, whose daily livelihoods have been affected by the invasive plant,” the statement reads in part.
Epe, known for its rich history and fishing industry, has been experiencing difficulties due to the spread of water hyacinth, which obstructs navigation and hampers fishing activities.
Many residents have expressed their concerns over the negative impact on their source of income.
Consequently, the LG chairman has started addressing the issue by directing the removal of the water hyacinth from the area’s waters.
“The removal enable hitch-free and profitable fishing for traders and reduce boat traffic, while also allowing for general recreational usage on the waterway,” her office said.
“This initiative is a crucial step towards revitalizing the local economy and improving the quality of life for our residents,” Animashaun was quoted as saying. “We are committed to ensuring that our waterways are safe and accessible for all.”
