No Plans To Hold Census In 2025 - NPC Denies Reports

The National Population Commission (NPC) has dismissed online reports claiming its chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, announced 2025 as the date for Nigeria’s next population and housing census.

In a statement issued by Erelu Taibat Yemi Oloruntoba, the Acting Director of Public Affairs, the NPC clarified that no official date has been set for the exercise.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the commission explained that remarks made by Kwarra during the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development in Abuja were misrepresented by some individuals seeking to mislead the public.

“The chairman expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu would make a proclamation on the census next year but did not specify any date,” the statement read. It emphasized that the authority to announce the census date rests solely with the president, not the NPC.

The NPC highlighted its commitment to transparency and revealed that discussions with the presidency are ongoing to determine a new timeline for the census, which was postponed by the previous administration.

Nigeria has not conducted a population census since 2006, leaving an 18-year gap in updated demographic data. This is despite the United Nations’ recommendation for countries to carry out population censuses every 10 years to ensure accurate statistics for development planning.

The commission noted that the census, originally scheduled for 2023, was postponed twice during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. The delays were reportedly intended to allow the incoming administration, elected during the 2023 general elections, to oversee the process.

The NPC reassured Nigerians of its readiness to conduct a credible census once a new date is approved by President Tinubu.
