Ekohotblog gathered that LASTVEB celebrated the annual World Youth Skills Day by hosting an awareness summit for students from Government Technical Colleges in Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry, Lagos Island and Ikeja at The Event Centre hall in Agidingbi, Ikeja, themed “Equipping Tomorrow’s Leaders With Skills For a Brighter Future.”
Comr. Giwa Moore, SSA to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on technical education and vocation, emphasised that the main objective of the programme is to create awareness about skills development.

“We need to let the people know that we need to move away from white-collar jobs; we need to think further on how to improve ourselves to invest in self-development through skill acquisition.” He said.
“…the expected outcome is for us to get more support from the private organisations… to get more additional technical colleges, we are going to have five additional colleges, and this is important to attract private involvement and investment.” He added.

Also, Hon. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, the commissioner for Lagos State Basic and Secondary Education, graced the occasion, as he encouraged students to embrace technical skills as an alternative to white-collar jobs.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Tolani Alli-Balogun revealed that the Lagos State Government has agreed to create five more technical colleges across the administrative divisions of the state, including Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Epe (IBILE), Eti-Osa and Meran.
Hon. Tolani encouraged parents to see the importance of technical vocation and also enrol their children in vocational education to get them skilled and self-reliant in the future.

“Most of our parents do not want to come to terms with the reality. The importance of having the regular academics mixed with skills acquisition is the in-thing all over the world.” he said
“The demand for labour is now there to embrace them; they wouldn’t be a liability to the parents, and they’d be ready to go out there to work or to be worked for. That is the essence of technical education, which is imperative all over the world now.” He added.
“I just want to appeal to our parents out there to let our students and youth at home to embrace that and even key into the federal government that is ongoing right now, whereby they would be paid a monthly salary to learn and also have a paid tuition initiative for those who want to go further to technical college of education.” He concluded.
