EKO HOT BLOG reports that the increasing cost of these traditional fuel sources has made cooking gas the go-to alternative for families aiming to save on kitchen expenses.

While cooking gas is cheap and convenient, it comes with its own risks, particularly the danger of leaks.

A gas leak in your kitchen can be deadly, leading to explosions, fires, and even health hazards. Therefore, if you notice the smell of gas or suspect a leak, it’s crucial to act quickly.

Here are five steps you should immediately take:

  1. Turn Off the Gas
The first and most important step is to turn off the gas supply at the cylinder valve. This will stop the flow of gas and prevent any further leakage. Do not wait or panic—just act swiftly to cut off the source of the leak.
  2. Ventilate the Area
Open all windows and doors in the kitchen and surrounding rooms. The goal is to allow fresh air in and disperse the accumulated gas. Do not turn on any fans or use any electrical appliances, as sparks could ignite the gas.
  3. Avoid Open Flames or Sparks
Never light a match or cigarette, and do not operate electrical devices (such as switches, fridges, or phones) when you suspect a gas leak. Even the smallest spark could ignite the gas, leading to a fire or explosion.
  4. Evacuate the Area
If you cannot resolve the leak immediately, leave the building as quickly and calmly as possible. Stay a safe distance away from the area and call for professional help.
  5. Contact a Professional Gas Technician
Once you’ve ensured everyone is safe, call a certified gas technician to inspect your cylinder, the regulator, and all connections. A technician will help identify the source of the leak and take the necessary steps to fix it.

While cooking gas remains the cheapest and most convenient cooking fuel in Nigeria, safety should always come first.
