Court Issues Fresh Summons To Yahaya Bello Over N110 Billion Fraud

The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has issued a fresh summons to Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, over allegations of criminal breach of trust and unlawful possession of property.

The court, presided over by Justice Maryann E. Anenih, has ordered Bello to appear on November 14, 2024. The charges stem from alleged offenses committed between 2016 and 2023.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that According to court documents, Bello is accused of violating Section 311 of the Penal Code Law, which deals with criminal breach of trust, and Section 319A, relating to the unlawful acquisition of property. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the summons via its official X account on Friday.

The summons states: “A complaint has been made on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that you, Yahaya Adoza Bello, between 2016 and 2023, committed the offenses of criminal breach of trust and unlawful possession of property reasonably suspected to have been obtained unlawfully.”

Bello is expected to appear at High Court No. 3, Maitama, at 9 a.m. on the specified date.

The EFCC has previously declared Bello wanted and recently filed new allegations, accusing him of involvement in a N110 billion fraud. Initial charges filed against him, his nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Suliman, and Abdulsalam Hudu involved money laundering to the tune of N80.2 billion.

The revised charges, filed on September 25, 2024, increased the amount to N110.4 billion.

Bello, alongside his successor Governor Usman Ododo, visited the EFCC’s Abuja office in September, but no formal questioning took place. EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren dismissed the visit as a strategic stunt, not a genuine attempt to follow the rule of law.
