In the House of Representatives, the bill for Etiti State was supported by a diverse group of lawmakers: Amobi Ogah (Labour Party, Isuikwato/Umuneochi), Miriam Onuoha (All Progressives Congress, Isiala Mbano/Okigwe/Onuimo), Kama Nkekama (Labour Party, Ivo/Onicha), Nnabuife Clara Chinwe (Young Progressives Party, Orumba North/South), and Anayo Onwuegbu (PDP, Aninri/Awgu/Oji River).
The proposed capital for Etiti State is Lokpanta, currently in Abia State.
Senator Ezea, reacting on his X account, explained that the bill seeks to amend Section 3(1) and the First Schedule, Part 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999. This amendment aims to create Adada State, increasing the number of states in the South-East to six, thereby achieving parity with other geopolitical zones in the country.
“The agitation for Adada State dates back to 1983, when Senator Isaiah Ani, representing Nsukka in the Second Republic, introduced the idea.
“Hopes were high after the 2014 Constitutional Conference recommended an additional state in the South-East. Although there have been other proposals for new states in the region, none has been as widely accepted and qualified as Adada,” Ezea stated.
For Etiti State bill passed by the House of Reps, sponsored by Ogah -Abia State, Onuoha -Imo State, Nkekama – Ebonyi State, Chinwe – Anambra State and Onwuegbu – Enugu State, seeks to complete the number of states in the South East to 6.
