EKO HOT BLOG reports that the scheme, aimed at supporting affiliate marketers in maintaining competitive margins amid pressure from fuel importers, was paused on July 13 after internal investigations exposed a racket involving fraudulent distribution practices.
According to reports, instead of supplying the discounted products through authorised retail outlets, some dealers allegedly sold them directly from the refinery tarmac at rates below the official gantry price. This manipulation enabled them to gain unfair profit margins without incurring standard logistics or operational costs.
A letter dated July 13, 2025, and signed by Fatima Dangote, Group Executive Director of Commercial Operations, confirmed the suspension. The letter noted that the scheme, launched to ensure wide access to affordable, clean fuel across the country, had been marred by rising complaints of abuse.
“In our drive to ensure the distribution and retail sale of DPRP refined petroleum products across your service stations nationwide, DPRP commenced the strategic partnership scheme with the sole aim of ensuring consumers nationwide have access to affordable and clean petroleum products,” the letter stated.
Despite multiple engagements with the involved marketers, the refinery said the misconduct had threatened market stability and compromised gantry operations.

In a new development, a senior refinery official confirmed that the ₦5 discount will soon return under stricter, more transparent guidelines. “The partnership is still on. It’s just the ₦5 discount we suspended for now, but we are coming up with another one soon,” the official disclosed.
