EKO HOT BLOG reports that Dangote, who assumed the chairmanship in 2005, is credited with transforming the company into one of Nigeria’s largest and most influential sugar producers. Under his leadership, Dangote Sugar embarked on large-scale expansion projects and advanced the Backward Integration Programme across Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States—efforts aimed at improving local production and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on sugar imports.
“In line with the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc hereby announces the retirement of our esteemed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON), effective June 16, 2025,” the statement read.
To ensure a smooth transition, the board has appointed Mr. Arnold Ekpe, a respected banker and former Group CEO of Ecobank, as the new Chairman. Ekpe has served on the board as an Independent Non-Executive Director and brings with him decades of experience in finance, leadership, and corporate governance.
The board praised Dangote for his “years of exemplary service” and “unwavering commitment to excellence,” stating that his leadership elevated the company’s profile both in Nigeria and internationally.
“We welcome Mr. Ekpe to his new role and look forward to the next chapter in our company’s journey under his leadership,” the statement concluded. “We also express our deep appreciation to Alhaji Aliko Dangote for his years of exemplary service.”
