EKO HOT BLOG reports that Probierz’s decision to step down comes shortly after star striker Robert Lewandowski publicly declared he would not play for the national team under the coach’s leadership. Tensions between both parties escalated after Probierz controversially stripped Lewandowski of the captain’s armband and handed it to midfielder Piotr Zielinski—a move that reportedly fractured the team’s unity.
The defeat to Finland leaves Poland third in their qualifying group with six points from three games—trailing leaders Finland, who have seven points from four matches, and the Netherlands, who also have six points with a game in hand.
In a statement released by the Polish Football Association on Wednesday, Probierz, 52, announced his resignation, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to coach the national team.
“I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation, the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation,” he said. “Performing this function was the fulfilment of my professional dreams and the greatest honour in my life.”
Probierz, appointed in September 2023, oversaw a turbulent tenure marked by inconsistency and a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, where Poland exited early after finishing bottom of their group. He led the team in 21 matches, recording nine wins, five draws, and seven losses.
He thanked the players and staff in his farewell message, saying he would continue to support the national team from the sidelines.

The Polish FA is now expected to launch the search for a new head coach amid growing concerns about team cohesion and their World Cup 2026 qualification hopes. Lewandowski’s future with the national team remains in doubt.
