A former Minister of Police Affairs, Oyewale Adesiyan, has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Osun State, citing worsening political instability and security concerns.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a statement released in Osogbo, the state capital, Adesiyan urged President Bola Tinubu to invoke Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution to restore order in the state. He argued that the ongoing crisis, coupled with what he described as the incompetence of the state governor, had created a situation that required urgent federal intervention.

“As a keen observer of events in Osun State over the past few months, I have seen a complete breakdown of law and order. The governor’s refusal to obey the Court of Appeal’s ruling on the local government crisis and his decision to uphold a lower court’s judgment have contributed to this instability,” Adesiyan stated.

He emphasized that the governor’s actions had led to lawlessness, including the loss of innocent lives, such as that of the reinstated Chairman of Irewole Local Government, Remi Abass.

“Where the chief executive indulges in disobeying the law, the resultant effect is a state of anarchy. This single event has already claimed scores of innocent lives, and with the political instability in Osun State, it is best to invoke the relevant constitutional provisions to restore peace,” he added.

Adesiyan also pointed to the recent communal clashes in the state, stating that numerous people had been killed and many others displaced. He warned that if urgent measures were not taken, the situation could escalate further, posing a serious threat to lives and property.
