Discos May Pay for Equipment Repairs To Prevent Grid Failures – NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced that power distribution companies (Discos) may soon bear the cost of repairing faulty transformers and other infrastructure, a move aimed at ensuring more prudent management of electricity systems.

NERC Chairman Sanusi Garba disclosed this during a public hearing on Thursday addressing the frequent collapses of Nigeria’s national power grid.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Garba highlighted that the repeated grid failures negatively impact not only electricity supply to consumers but also the viability of power generation and distribution companies.

He stressed that immediate action must be taken to stabilize the grid and improve its reliability.

He criticized the lack of adequate protection for vital equipment, citing instances where transformers caught fire, leading to nationwide blackouts. Garba also expressed frustration over the failure of Discos to address weather-related issues affecting power supply.

In a related development, Joy Ogaji, CEO of the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), revealed that Nigeria has experienced 162 grid collapses between 2013 and 2023.

She urged NERC to be more proactive in addressing these issues and called for greater transparency in data reporting within the power sector. Ogaji noted that the private sector’s data often differs from what is officially reported, and more accurate data capturing is necessary.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that security concerns have delayed repairs to the Shiroro-Mando transmission line, following its vandalization.

The blackout caused by the damage has persisted for several days in parts of northern Nigeria.

TCN noted that power restoration in these areas may take longer due to ongoing security challenges.
