October 1: Doctors Announce Strike Amid Severe Doctor Shortage
The National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners has raised concerns about the alarming doctor-to-patient ratio in Kano State and announced plans to begin an industrial strike on October 1.
In a statement released on Saturday, the association’s Kano State Secretary, Dr. Anas Idris Hassan, said the Kano State Government has yet to address several critical issues, despite a previous agreement reached in June.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to Hassan, the government has failed to implement the agreed-upon hazard allowance, including the COVID-19 allowance, which the federal government has been disbursing since 2021 but has not reached Kano’s healthcare workers.
He also highlighted that newly hired doctors have not received their salaries since September 2023.
The association also expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of hospitals and the lack of essential equipment, calling for urgent intervention to address these challenges.
Hassan highlighted the severe doctor shortage in Kano, revealing a ratio of one doctor for every 33,000 patients—far below the World Health Organization’s recommended standard.
