DOJ Moves to Drop Corruption Case Against NYC Mayor Eric Adams

- The Justice Department moves to drop corruption charges against NYC Mayor Eric Adams.
- A memo cites excessive publicity and interference with Adams’ mayoral duties as reasons for dismissal.
- Adams, who denied wrongdoing, was set to face trial ahead of the 2025 mayoral election.
The U.S. Department of Justice is set to drop the federal corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, according to an internal memo.
The memo, authored by Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, instructs the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Danielle Sassoon, to dismiss the charges “as soon as practicable.” However, the decision is contingent on several conditions, including a post-election review by the Southern District after the November 2025 mayoral race.

Adams, a Democrat, was indicted last September on allegations of accepting luxury travel perks and soliciting illegal campaign donations from Turkish nationals in exchange for political favours. His prosecution marked the first of a sitting New York City mayor in modern history. Adams pleaded not guilty, and the case was initially set to go to trial this spring.
His attorney, Alex Spiro—who has also represented billionaire Elon Musk—welcomed the dismissal, stating, “As I said from the outset, the mayor is innocent—and he would prevail. Today, he has.” Speaking to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Spiro added, “He would have been acquitted in 45 minutes.”
Neither the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District nor Adams’ administration provided a comment, with the latter referring inquiries to the mayor’s legal team.
The Justice Department justified the dismissal on two primary grounds: concerns over extensive media coverage tainting the case and the impact of the prosecution on Adams’ ability to govern effectively.
“The pending prosecution has unduly restricted Mayor Adams’ ability to devote full attention and resources to the illegal immigration and violent crime that escalated under the policies of the prior administration,” Bove wrote in the memo.

Adams, who is seeking re-election this fall, has consistently denied wrongdoing and argued that the case was politically motivated in response to his criticism of President Joe Biden’s immigration policies.
“It cannot be ignored that Mayor Adams criticized the prior administration’s immigration policies before the charges were filed,” Bove noted.
The case had been set for trial just months before the Democratic primary, where Adams faces a competitive field of challengers.
