In a bold move to address the scarcity of locally authored academic materials, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, has unveiled 50 new textbooks sponsored by the TETFund Higher Education Book Development Intervention Project.

The landmark event took place at the Conference Hall of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja.

In his address, Dr. Alausa highlighted the chronic shortage of indigenous tertiary-level textbooks, which has left Nigeria’s higher education sector heavily dependent on foreign publications.

This reliance, he noted, not only pressures the nation’s demand for foreign exchange but also undermines national pride.

“The scarcity of tertiary-level texts in Nigeria has reached a crisis proportion,” Dr. Alausa said, emphasizing that the TETFund’s Book Development Project, established in 2009, was designed to reverse this trend by encouraging local authorship and academic publishing.

The Minister explained that the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) was set up to guide the implementation of the project. The intervention focuses on three critical areas:

1. Publication of academic books and conversion of high-quality theses into textbooks

2. Support for professional association journals

3. Establishment and sustainability of Academic Publishing Centres (APCs)

Dr. Alausa reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting education through increased funding and policy reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He emphasized that improving local content development would enhance Nigeria’s global ranking in tertiary education and foster national development.

“The presentation of these 50 books will mark the beginning of a sustained effort to bridge the gap in indigenous authorship and reduce our dependence on foreign publications,” the Minister added.

He commended TETFund for its pivotal role in advancing educational resources and urged continued collaboration between scholars and the government to promote academic excellence.
