Operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested prominent Kano-based activist Zubair Zubair, known for his vocal criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Zubair was reportedly detained in Kano before being transferred to Abuja.
In a statement regarding the arrest, Zubair’s lawyer, Barrister Harun Magashi, confirmed that the DSS had initially held Zubair in Kano but later handed him over to the Nigerian Police Headquarters in Abuja.
“Zubair was arrested yesterday by the DSS in Kano. Initially, he was detained by the DSS, but they handed him over to the police in Abuja,” Magashi told Channels Television.

When asked about the reasons behind the arrest, Magashi mentioned, “We are yet to confirm the charges against him, but we suspect it is related to his active involvement in the End Bad Governance protests and his outspoken criticism of the current administration.”
Another activist and close ally of Zubair, Nura Muhammad, commented on the arrest, stating, “Zubair has been unwavering in his advocacy for the people and has consistently challenged the policies of the Tinubu administration. While his arrest is not surprising, it clearly represents an attack on free speech.”
Zubair is a key figure in the Take It Back Movement, a leading organization in Nigeria’s activism and civic engagement scene.
As of the latest reports, attempts to obtain comments from the DSS and the Police Headquarters have been unsuccessful.
The activist community in Kano and beyond has called for Zubair’s immediate release, voicing alarm over his safety and the growing suppression of dissent in the country.
