Officers from the Department of State Services (DSS) reportedly took over the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on Monday afternoon.

According to SERAP, the DSS agents were demanding to meet with the directors of the human rights organization.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a brief statement on its X (formerly Twitter) account, SERAP condemned the action and urged President Bola Tinubu to instruct the DSS to stop its harassment and intimidation of Nigerians.

“Officers from Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS) are unlawfully occupying SERAP’s office in Abuja, seeking to meet our directors.

President Tinubu must immediately direct the SSS to end this harassment and intimidation against Nigerians,” the statement read.

The incident occurred just a day after SERAP gave President Tinubu a 48-hour ultimatum to reverse the recent petrol price hike implemented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

In its statement on Sunday, SERAP criticized the fuel price increase, calling it a violation of constitutional rights and international human rights obligations.

“Nigerians have been denied justice for too long and have paid the price for corruption in the oil sector,” the statement said.

SERAP further accused the government of punishing the poor instead of addressing poverty, inequality, and corruption in the oil industry, which have led to the suffering of already impoverished citizens.
