Resume In 72 Hours Or Be Sacked – Ebonyi Gov Threatens Striking Workers

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to striking workers in the state, warning of dismissal and salary withholding if they fail to resume work.

The governor’s directive comes in response to a seven-day warning strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ebonyi State chapter, over the alleged non-implementation of the new ₦75,000 minimum wage.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that addressing journalists at the Government House in Centenary City, Abakaliki, on Monday, Nwifuru insisted that the state does not owe workers and has commenced payment of the approved minimum wage.

He vowed to replace any worker who fails to return to their duty post within the stipulated period.

Nwifuru stated:
“If you didn’t go to work, not only will I withhold your salary, but I will also replace you within 72 hours. I am not guilty of owing any worker; I am paying what is supposed to be paid. If you don’t return to work, you will forget about the state government.”

He further directed commissioners and heads of departments to ensure compliance, stating that salaries would be paid based on attendance records.

“I have instructed the Civil Service Commission and all government departments to record attendance. Salaries will be paid through table payment based on the number of days workers reported to their duty posts,” he added.

The NLC strike, which commenced on Sunday, has disrupted activities in the state as workers protest against perceived unfulfilled agreements on wage increments.
