Job Purpose:
The Economist will support the Economics department by providing strategic economic analysis for informed decision-making. The role involves evaluating projects, business opportunities, and existing assets while monitoring market trends, commodity prices, and industry developments. The successful candidate will be expected to develop analytical models, understand fiscal regimes, and gain a strong grasp of OER’s business strategy. As expertise grows, the role will transition to a more independent capacity with direct responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct economic analysis and prepare reports to support strategic business decisions.
- Develop and update financial models for investment evaluations, scenario analysis, and profitability assessments.
- Assess the viability of potential acquisitions, mergers, and divestment opportunities.
- Track individual asset performance, analyzing production data and financial metrics for optimization.
- Monitor commodity prices, industry trends, and regulatory frameworks impacting business operations.
- Generate in-house forecasts of relevant commodity prices and economic indicators.
- Prepare reports and presentations on oil & gas market trends, fiscal policies, and company performance.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies, controls, and decision-making processes.
- Support deal origination, transaction management, and post-transaction analysis.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Petroleum Engineering, Business, or related fields.
- A postgraduate degree in Economics or Energy-related disciplines is an advantage.
- One of the degrees (undergraduate or postgraduate) must be in Economics.
- 3 – 5 years post-NYSC experience in an operator environment, finance, or asset management.
- Strong analytical skills, with a keen interest in business and market dynamics.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Basic understanding of petroleum economics and Nigerian fiscal terms.
- Ability to build and interpret complex financial models.
