Ecuador Imposes 27% Tariff on Mexican Goods

- Ecuador imposes 27% tariff on Mexican goods, citing fair treatment for local producers.
- The tariff will remain until a free trade agreement with Mexico is signed.
- Diplomatic tensions rise after a raid on the Mexican embassy in April 2024.
Ecuador will impose a 27% tariff on Mexican goods to “ensure fair treatment” for Ecuadorian producers, President Daniel Noboa announced on Monday.
In a post on X, Noboa expressed openness to negotiating a free trade deal with Mexico, but emphasized it would not happen “when there is abuse,” without providing further details. Until such a deal is reached, the 27% tariff will apply to Mexican imports.

According to Mexican government data, Ecuador imported $541 million worth of goods from Mexico in 2023, with medications making up 12.6% of that total. However, Ecuador remains a small trading partner for Mexico, accounting for less than 0.1% of Mexico’s total exports last year.
This tariff announcement follows US President Donald Trump’s decision to pause his threat of a 25% tariff on all Mexican imports after speaking with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Mexico’s economic ministry has not yet responded to CNN’s request for comment on Ecuador’s decision.
The move comes after diplomatic relations between Ecuador and Mexico broke down in 2024 following a controversial raid on the Mexican embassy in Quito.
The raid was carried out by Ecuadorian authorities to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, who had sought asylum in Mexico.
