President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s electricity sector are beginning to produce positive results, particularly through off-grid solar projects being implemented in underserved communities across the country, Eko Hot Blog reports.
Speaking in his Democracy Day address on Friday, the President highlighted key measures introduced by his administration to improve power supply and address long-standing challenges in the sector.

Tinubu noted that the implementation of the Electricity Act, which decentralised the power sector and gave states greater participation in electricity generation and distribution, would help tackle persistent issues affecting power supply nationwide.
He also disclosed that the Presidential Power Sector Task Force had intensified efforts to close the country’s metering gap and address legacy debts in the electricity sector estimated at over N4 trillion.
According to the President, the task force has been authorised to raise a N4 trillion bond to settle verified debts and strengthen the financial stability of the power industry.

“The Presidential Power Sector Task Force is working hard to reduce the metering deficit and has been authorised to raise a N4 trillion bond to settle verified legacy debts. Alongside these reforms, the Rural Electrification Agency, supported by the World Bank and the African Development Bank, is successfully ensuring that underserved communities participate fully in the nation’s growth story,” Tinubu stated.
The President said the Federal Government remains committed to expanding electricity access, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas, through sustainable energy solutions.
Recent efforts by the government have seen the deployment of solar-powered mini-grids across several communities, with more than 1,000 projects currently being rolled out nationwide to improve access to reliable electricity.
