Proactive measures have been initiated by Epe Local Government following a suspected outbreak of Cholera which has claimed three lives in Erepoto while acute symptoms have also been recorded in Oko-Orisan riverine communities.
Speaking in an interview with Epe Local Government Medical Chief (MOH), Dr Nurain Ayeola confirmed the death of three residents of the community. He said that the Local Government environment and health officials are managing the situation to contain the spread as at the time of filing this report.
“It is true, the community believes that the outbreak is not medical but spiritual. They believe that “sonpono” is out to attack their households. They had no proper medical care which led to their death and that is exactly what happened”
“Until we can identify the organism, the best we can say is that it is just an outbreak of people vomiting and having diarrhoea. I can confirm that we have an increased number of people in the Erepoto community that are coming down with these complaints”
“Since we were alerted on Friday, 30th July 2021, the Local Government officers have moved there and we have done house to house enumeration of the number of people, we have also started health education, this morning, I’m on my way to the community where we are going to have community dialogue where we are meeting all members of the community. So, essentially, the purpose is to inform them about the preventive measures to take to contain the spread,” he stated.
Dr Ayeola further disclosed to Eko Hot Blog that the Environmental officers of the Local Government have moved to the riverine community to enable the riverine dwellers step up on their environmental cleanliness and hygiene. He also assured that if the riverine dwellers of Erepoto take their family members to the hospital at the observation of the symptoms, many lives would be saved.

Eko Hot Blog also gathered that Mr Olayinka Kazeem, Epe Community Health Committee Secretary conversant with the area had alerted members of the public through microblogging platform, Whatsapp, to be cautious in dealing with seafood from farmers residing in the axis based due to their unpalatable environmental hygiene.
He pleaded that residents should continue to adhere strictly to COVID-19 protocols, washing hands after defecation, proper handling of crabs, fish and other aquatic life. He emphasised the need for people to stop open defecation into the river.
