Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised Darwin Núñez’s game-changing contribution after the striker’s stoppage-time brace secured a 2-0 victory over Brentford, extending the Reds’ lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points on Saturday.
The Uruguayan forward, often criticized for his inconsistent form, had not scored in the league since November and had managed only two goals this season before delivering a crucial late double in west London.

After a strong start to Slot’s tenure, Liverpool had faltered recently, drawing three of their last six league games.
“During the season, you hope for moments like this,” said Slot. “We could have scored a late winner against Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, and Fulham. Today it finally worked—we managed to score in the last few seconds.”
Speculation about Núñez’s future has been rife, with links to a potential move to the Saudi Pro League following struggles to justify his £85 million ($104 million) transfer fee from Benfica in 2022.
The 25-year-old has often been overshadowed by Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota in Slot’s attacking lineup this season. However, the Liverpool boss highlighted Núñez’s impact off the bench.

“He always makes a difference when he comes on. He brings energy and power,” Slot noted. “It’s great to have someone like Darwin in the squad.”
Reflecting on recent frustrations after being held to draws by Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, Slot emphasized the importance of his side’s performance and resilience.

“I don’t focus solely on results. We’ve been creating plenty of chances, but now with the win, I can also point to the performance,” the Dutch manager added.
“Brentford gave us a tough game. They’re a strong team with a smart game plan. But overall, it was a fantastic match to watch, as it always is when Liverpool play.”
