EPWA - Rare Commitment To Womenfolk And Community Development By TJ Abass

Criticisms here and there notwithstanding, it is almost impossible these days to imagine a progressive society, without the activities of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

This is especially the case on this side of the global divide, where inertia on the part of governments and its representatives is the rule rather than the exception.

There are records of NGOs that have risen from the shadows of corruption and lack of transparency to real actors in advocacy and in development.

The whistle-blowing stance of some NGOs, their commitment to the enhancement of the human person through literacy advocacy, health and moral well-being, for example, have left impacts in the development of the society.

Some particularly has taken the gauntlet in crusading for the advancement of particular fields of endeavour, and one organisation that stands out in this area is the Epe Professional Women Association, EPWA.

EPWA, as a Non-Government Organisation, provides an umbrella for professional women who are indigenes of Epe Division in Lagos State. Part of what makes the organisation outstanding is that it clearly embodies the spirit of altruism and service to the community given its antecedents.

The Organisation may not be so peopled by financial heavyweights, but what it lacks in the area of money bags so to say, it gains in a rare class of membership – individuals committed to the common course that brings them together.- the course is to leave a mark, even at a personal sacrifice. To this extent, those who occupy rare and privileged positions have not let their high standings mar the group goals, but have learnt to accommodate all others driven by the same welfarist and humanist passions.

They might not be rich famous and wealth in terms of the societal definition from material acquisition but they are wealthy in terms of their commitment to the advancement of their community. Their religion is love and their language is service to humanity.

Truly, the spirit of altruism and selflessness has been the hallmark of this organisation.

No wonder in their brief period of existence, the organisation has been a parameter with which to measure other organisations.

The yearly medical mission, a scholarship program for indigenous Epe Students, empowerment programme for our women just to mention a few have separated EPWA from the rest of the pack.

Recently, it organised the first-ever Women conference at the prestigious Epe LASU campus.

The theme of the conference is :The Role Of Women In National Development”

EPWA believes when you empower a woman, you have empowered a whole Nation, and that Women are selfless. Women are industrious.

It was indeed a successful conference as issues of national consequence were discussed. Indeed, issues germane to the progress of Epe division. Issues that address the dichotomy that has been part of the history of the community, issues that will take us on the path towards unity that has so long eluded the community.

Issues that would pave the way for economic prosperity and unlimited opportunities for our younger generation have been the concern of the group. There is no better way to demonstrate a passion for the advancement of people than the group has thus far demonstrated. Epe professional Women Association, EPWA taking the spirit of altruism to the next level.
