An explosion at a store selling locally manufactured weapons in Zamfara State’s Talata Mafara Central Market on Tuesday left four people dead and at least twenty others injured. The incident caused widespread panic, with traders and shoppers fleeing for safety as the blast rocked the busy market.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that a community member confirmed the incident to journalists in a phone conversation, stating, “Today at Talata Mafara Central Market, there was an explosion, killing several people and injuring many others.” A video obtained by SaharaReporters showed at least twenty individuals, mostly traders, sustaining serious injuries from the explosion.
An eyewitness revealed that the blast originated from a shop dealing in locally made firearms, a common trade in some parts of northern Nigeria. However, neither the Zamfara State government nor the Nigeria Police Force has officially confirmed the cause of the explosion.
Zamfara State has been grappling with worsening insecurity, including banditry and kidnappings, which have fueled the proliferation of homemade weapons often used for self-defense. This tragic incident highlights the dangers associated with the unregulated sale of arms in local markets.

Efforts to reach the Zamfara State Police Commissioner, Yezid Abubakar, for comment were unsuccessful. His phone line remained unreachable, displaying a ‘user busy’ message during multiple calls on Tuesday evening. He has also not responded to text messages or WhatsApp inquiries as of the time of reporting.
