Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Meta Platforms Inc., owned by Mark Zuckerberg, over alleged invasion of his privacy.
The lawsuit, filed at a Lagos High Court, accuses Meta of publishing a misleading video on Facebook under the name “AfriCare Health Center.”

The video falsely claimed that Falana had been suffering from prostatitis for over 16 years, a condition he denies ever having.
Falana’s legal team, led by Olumide Babalola, argues that the publication violated his constitutional right to privacy under Section 37 of the Nigerian Constitution and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. He claims the video was false, misleading, and damaging to his reputation.

The senior lawyer is seeking a court declaration that Meta’s publication constitutes an invasion of his privacy.
He also demands an immediate removal of the video from Facebook, alongside the $5 million compensation for the emotional and psychological distress caused.

According to Falana, the viral nature of the video, accessible to millions worldwide, has exposed him to ridicule and tarnished the reputation he has built over decades.
He stated that Meta acted recklessly by failing to verify the authenticity of the claims before allowing the video on its platform.
“For the purpose of this suit, I do not find these stories libelous, but they are false, offensive, reckless, and insensitive,” he said in his affidavit.

He further alleged that Meta’s actions were motivated by a desire to generate traffic and boost advertisement revenue at the expense of his personal and professional integrity.
Falana urged the court to uphold his right to privacy and compel Meta to take responsibility for the damage caused by the false publication.
