Fatal Crash on Lagos Third Mainland Bridge; Four Rescued, Two Injured in Fadeyi Collision

A fatal accident occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, involving a J5 Ford bus loaded with perishable goods and a Mercedes truck. One person was confirmed dead, and four others were rescued from the wreckage during the crash at Ilubirin, inward Sura.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), led by General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, quickly responded to the scene, coordinating rescue operations. With help from bystanders, four victims were pulled from the wreckage. Unfortunately, one person, trapped inside the bus, died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the J5 Ford bus suffered brake failure while speeding, which led to the crash with the Mercedes truck. Emergency response teams, including LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and LASAMBUS, assisted in rescuing survivors and clearing the wreckage. The injured were taken to the Lagos Island General Hospital for treatment.

The team also cleared the accident site, removing the vehicles and spilled goods, which allowed for the flow of traffic to be restored. LASTMA’s General Manager expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and stressed the importance of road safety, especially during the festive season. He urged drivers to avoid speeding and ensure their vehicles, especially brakes, are in good condition.

In a separate incident, two men were injured in a multiple-vehicle crash at Fadeyi, Lagos, involving an articulated truck with a 40-foot container, a Toyota Corolla, and a Mazda commercial bus. The injured victims, a driver and a passenger from the Mazda bus, received medical attention at the scene.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) quickly responded to the crash site, providing rescue and medical care. Traffic control measures and diversions were put in place to reduce congestion in the area.

The LASEMA response team later discovered that the articulated truck had suffered a mechanical failure when one of its tyres detached, causing the crash. Although no one died, the police were on the scene to manage traffic and maintain order.
