The Federal Government has issued an alert following the confirmed outbreak of Anthrax in Zamfara State, urging citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures.
The announcement came from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, with a statement signed by its Director of Information, Ben Bem Goong.

The ministry identified Anthrax, a zoonotic disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, as a significant health concern due to its potential to infect both animals and humans.
“This development calls for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with the disease,” the ministry stated.
Symptoms in humans and animals include fever, vomiting, swollen lymph nodes, and bleeding from major openings, among others.
The ministry highlighted the disease’s classification as a notifiable illness by the , given its capacity to cause high morbidity and mortality.

Preventive steps, such as risk assessments, surveillance, and ring vaccination of animals in high-risk areas, were emphasized as essential measures to curb the spread.
“Prompt detection and response are critical,” the statement added.
The ministry called on neighboring states and stakeholders to intensify efforts to prevent the disease from spreading further.
Livestock farmers and the general public were advised to report unusual illnesses in animals or humans and to strictly adhere to the guidelines provided by health authorities.
The outbreak raises concerns for Nigeria’s agricultural sector, particularly in regions with significant livestock populations.
