FG Introduces National Citizens Value Brigade in Education Curriculum
The federal government approved the establishment of the National Citizens Value Brigade in primary and secondary schools nationwide on Monday.
EKO HOT BLOG gathered that this initiative aims to address the growing concerns over the erosion of good morals and values among the youth, leading to various forms of misconduct.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, shared this decision with State House correspondents following the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
Idris stated, “Today, the council approved several policy changes to strengthen our national value system. The primary initiative is the establishment of the National Citizens Value Brigade in all primary and secondary schools. This program will help cultivate role model citizens in Nigeria.”

He noted that the council has recognized a gradual decline in values among the younger generation, resulting in behaviors that do not align with the nation’s traditions and norms. “There is a need to reinforce and return to the core values that Nigeria has been known for over time, which have unfortunately seen a decline,” he added.
Additionally, the Federal Government mandated the incorporation of a national value charter into the basic and post-basic school curricula, including the standardization of national symbols. Idris explained that the new syllabus will cover essential topics in civic education and will be adopted by government appointees upon taking office.
“There will also be a mandatory inclusion of the national value charter and national symbols not only in the curriculum but also in civic education teachings,” he said. “Furthermore, government appointees will undergo training on our national values and the standardization of national symbols, such as the national flag and the Naira notes.”
The National Orientation Agency will also focus on reorienting Nigerians on how to properly display the national flag in public spaces, offices, and vehicles. “There is a significant need for value reorientation among all Nigerians, and this administration will prioritize this effort,” the minister added.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman announced that the new curricula for schools will be implemented in October 2024.
