EDITOR’S PICK

Types of Seasonal Work Permits

There are two main types of seasonal work permits based on the duration of employment:

  1. Seasonal Work Visa (Up to 3 Months):
    • Applicants from countries requiring a visa must apply through a Finnish embassy before traveling.
    • Those from visa-exempt countries can apply directly for a certificate for seasonal work through the Finnish Immigration Service.
  2. Residence Permit for Seasonal Work (3 to 9 Months):
    • Applicants seeking employment for more than three months need to obtain a residence permit before entering Finland.
    • Processing can take up to 90 days, so early application is recommended.

Eligibility and Requirements

To qualify for a seasonal work permit, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Job Offer and Contract: A signed employment contract from a Finnish employer is mandatory.
  • Minimum Wage: Workers must earn at least €1,430 (approximately N2.2 million) per month, unless a collective agreement specifies otherwise.
  • Accommodation: Applicants must arrange housing that meets Finland’s health and safety standards.
  • Application Process: All required documents must be submitted to avoid processing delays.

How to Apply

  1. Secure a Job Offer: Contact Finnish employers in agriculture, forestry, or tourism.
  2. Sign a Contract: Obtain a legally binding employment contract.
  3. Prepare Required Documents: Ensure all necessary documents, such as a valid passport, employment contract, and proof of accommodation, are ready.
  4. Choose the Right Permit: Apply for either a seasonal work visa (for up to 3 months) or a residence permit (for 3-9 months).
  5. Pay Application Fees: Submit the required processing fees.
  6. Monitor Application Status: Track the application progress through the Finnish Immigration Service’s official website.
