A recent market survey has highlighted fluctuating prices of essential food items across Nigeria. While some staples have become more affordable, others remain expensive, reflecting the country’s economic realities.

Tomatoes are selling for ₦3,500 per small basket, but prices fluctuate between ₦8,000 and ₦9,000 due to seasonal availability.
In major markets like Abuja and Onitsha, a large tuber of yam now sells for ₦2,500, marking a steady trend in pricing.
Consumers have seen some relief in the price of garri, with a 60kg bag now selling for ₦37,500, reflecting a decline from previous rates.
However, protein sources remain expensive. Chicken (1kg) currently costs around ₦4,000, while boneless beef (1kg) is priced at approximately ₦6,000, with slight variations across different markets.
These fluctuations are influenced by several factors, including supply chain disruptions, transportation costs, and market demand. The rising cost of certain staples continues to strain household budgets, particularly for low-income earners. However, the price reductions in some food categories offer a slight reprieve for consumers grappling with Nigeria’s high cost of living.
