EKO HOT BLOG reports that while staying hydrated is the first line of defense, choosing the right foods can also speed up recovery and soothe your digestive system. Here are seven foods that are gentle on the stomach and can help relieve diarrhoea symptoms:
1. White Rice
Plain white rice is a bland, low-fibre food that absorbs excess fluid in the intestines. It’s easy to digest and can help firm up loose stools. Avoid adding sauces or spices, as these may irritate the gut further.
2. Bananas
Bananas are rich in potassium, an important electrolyte often lost during diarrhoea. They also contain pectin, a soluble fibre that helps absorb liquid in the intestines, making stools firmer.
3. Toast (Plain or White Bread)
Plain toast or white bread can provide your body with energy without irritating your stomach. Like rice, it’s a part of the BRAT diet (Banana, Rice, Apple sauce, Toast) often recommended for digestive issues.
4. Apple Sauce
Applesauce contains pectin, which helps bind loose stools. It’s also gentle on the stomach and provides natural sugars for energy. Unlike raw apples, which can be too fibrous, applesauce is easier to digest.
5. Boiled Potatoes
Plain, peeled boiled potatoes are a good source of energy and electrolytes. They’re easy on the stomach and can help slow down bowel movements. Avoid butter or spicy toppings.
6. Yoghurt (with Live Cultures)
While dairy is often discouraged during diarrhoea, yoghurt with probiotics (like Lactobacillus) can help restore the balance of good bacteria in the gut, especially after an infection or use of antibiotics.
7. Herbal Teas (Like Ginger or Peppermint)
Though not food in the solid sense, ginger or peppermint teas can calm intestinal spasms, reduce nausea, and help your stomach settle. Avoid caffeinated drinks, which may worsen dehydration.

While these foods can help, avoid greasy, spicy, high-fibre, or sugary meals during a runny stomach episode. Also, drink plenty of water or oral rehydration solutions to prevent dehydration.
