Officers arrived to find the bodies of two men and one woman at the scene, while a fourth victim later succumbed to gunshot wounds in the hospital, Fitzgerald confirmed.
Authorities are investigating whether the assailants approached the victims on foot or shot from a vehicle. No arrests have been made at this time.
The shooting occurred on Magnolia Avenue, near a hookah and cigar lounge. Witnesses standing in line outside the venue told Al.com that some of the gunfire sounded as if it came from a weapon modified to fire automatically.
Speaking about the injured, Fitzgerald said, “We have dozens of gunshot victims from the area, with at least four in critical condition.”
According to the Gun Violence Archive, this incident contributes to the more than 400 mass shootings that have occurred across the U.S. so far this year.
The organization defines a mass shooting as an event in which four or more people are injured or killed.
