The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to respect the rule of law in order to restore peace in the state.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Wike emphasized that peace is only possible when court judgments are followed.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that his remarks come amid escalating tensions between Wike and Fubara, which have intensified following the recent local government elections in Rivers State.

A court ruling had directed the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to withhold security for the elections and prohibited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the voter register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). However, the Fubara-led administration proceeded with the elections on Saturday, leading to the swearing-in of newly elected officials on Monday.

The aftermath of the elections saw widespread violence, with three local government council secretariats set ablaze and properties destroyed. In response, Fubara vowed to investigate the incidents and established a panel to identify those responsible for the attacks.

Wike, however, insisted that the key to restoring peace is adherence to the court ruling. “Obey court judgement and allow the rule of law to prevail. If you don’t, you are inviting anarchy and violence,” Wike stated, referencing his own time as governor, when he claimed to have always followed legal rulings.
