Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara revealed that he rushed to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) at 1 AM on Friday to prevent the Rivers State Police Command from taking over the premises.

A video showed the governor and his team entering the RSIEC premises, where men were seen accusing police officers of attempting to scale the gates and access the strong room, allegedly to seize sensitive electoral materials meant for Saturday’s local government election in the state.

Fubara was accompanied by key figures, including his Chief of Staff, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and members of both the State and National Assemblies.

They, along with other stakeholders, positioned themselves at the RSIEC office to monitor the situation.

Several police officers were spotted inside two trucks and two Hilux vehicles near the premises.

The video also captured Fubara with lawmakers and political stakeholders entering the facility, while background voices could be heard shouting, “Move this thing! Illegal police! Illegal police! Thief! Thief!” Some individuals at the scene were seen hitting vehicles inside the RSIEC compound, demanding that they vacate the premises.

Earlier, in a statement from the Rivers State Police Command, the spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that the police had received a court order restraining them from providing security during the October 5th, 2024, local government elections.
