It was gathered that the manager of the fuel station was among those detained, while the station’s owner was said to be unaware of the suspected criminal activities. Sources revealed the suspects admitted to being members of a robbery gang.
Confirming the arrests, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the operation is part of an ongoing effort to dismantle a gang known for hijacking trucks transporting fuel and other goods.
Hundeyin explained, “The operation was carried out by the Tactical Squad Hawk of the command. Four suspects were arrested including a fuel station manager. The owner of the fuel station denied knowledge of their activities. NUPENG also played a vital role in apprehending the manager.”
He further stated that the arrests followed a previous operation in which seven suspects were taken into custody and a hijacked fuel tanker was recovered.
That earlier incident occurred on June 28, when a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit was hijacked and later found empty in the Orile area. Police investigations led to the arrest of seven individuals at a fuel station in Ejigbo, where the stolen product was allegedly being offloaded.
The suspects from that case were identified as Izuchukwu Nwanoruo, Kayode Falodun, Ojo Ayodele, Ayomide Thompson, Ahmed Saliu, Igbalaye Kareem, and Babatunde Ahmed. The recovered tanker has been secured as evidence.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that the suspects are cooperating with ongoing investigations and will face charges once the inquiry is concluded.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, praised the officers involved and encouraged residents to continue sharing credible information to support police efforts in protecting lives and property throughout the state.
